Family-friendly and Historic things to do at the Jersey Shore in September!

Who says Summer has to end just because school begins? Check out these fun, family-friendly and historic things to do at the Jersey Shore through the month of September!
CLIMB THE SANDY HOOK LIGHTHOUSE
The oldest operating lighthouse in the states, Sandy Hook Lighthouse was lit for the first time in 1764. Surrounded by Fort Hancock and the Gateway National Recreation Area, visitors can tour the Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters, then stay the day to enjoy one of the seven beaches. There’s also hiking, bird watching, salt marshes, and a maritime holly forest to explore. In 1764, it stood just 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook. The lighthouse now stands over a mile from the northern tip and on June 11, 1964, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse was declared a National Historic Landmark on the 200th anniversary of its first lighting. https://www.nps.gov/…/history…/sandy-hook-lighthouse.htm
STROLL BACK IN TIME TO THE ‘50s IN WILDWOOD
You don’t need a poodle skirt to visit the Wildwoods but as home to the country’s largest collection of midcentury resort architecture, you’ll wish you had one. While there, visit the Doo Wop Experience Museum for a stroll back in time. Brimming with cool artifacts, fascinating history and bright neon lights, the museum is a celebration of architecture, design, music and pop culture. Ask about the tours of the classic landmarked Wildwood motels. https://www.doowopusa.org
VISIT LUCY THE ELEPHANT
Created in 1881, Lucy the Elephant was built as a gimmick to attract people to the coast. Presidents and royalty came from around the world to stay at the neighboring Elephant Hotel and climb the six stories to the top. Lucy has survived hurricanes, ocean floods, and even an accidental fire while she served as a tavern. The Save Lucy Committee, a small group of concerned citizens, completely restored and saved the decaying structure. In 1976, she was designated a National Historic Landmark as the oldest surviving example of a unique form of “zoomorphic” architecture, and the oldest “roadside” attraction in America. https://lucytheelephant.org/
EXPLORE ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK
This barrier-island preserve remains virtually untouched with an extensive shoreline of close to 10 miles of pristine beaches, dense maritime forests, rolling sand dunes and tidal marshes. Originally home to the Lenape Tribe, Island Beach continues to house ospreys, foxes and other wildlife as well as over 400 species of plants. Visitors can picnic, hike, ride their bicycles, swim, surf or kayak, and even bring your horse 😉 http://www.islandbeachnj.org/ParkFacts/
MAKE A CRAFT AT TUCKERTON SEAPORT
A 40-acre waterfront village on the mainland side of Barnegat Bay west of Long Beach Island, comprises 15 buildings with displays of coastal culture, plus a self-service café. Tuckerton Seaport is home to the Jersey Shore Folklife Center, one of the 5 designated folklife centers in NJ. The Center celebrates the creative spirit of the region, its traditional arts, and its occupational and recreational folklife by amplifying the diverse communities and traditions of the Barnegat Bay and the Pinelands. Creek tours on Saturdays and Sundays. https://tuckertonseaport.org
